The local and international science community will next month gather at the 2017 Science Forum South Africa (SFSA), hosted by the Department of Science and Technology (DST).

SFSA 2017 will be staged at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research in Pretoria on 7 and 8 December.

Now in its third year, SFSA aims to stimulate a vibrant debate on the role of science, technology and innovation in society, as well as create a networking platform for key actors in the science community.

The DST, led by minister Naledi Pandor, introduced the now-annual event in 2015 as a way to enrich the national public discourse on the importance and role of science in society.

According to the science and technology ministry, SFSA 2017 will build on the momentum and conversations established during the first two events and provide the department with an informal platform to consult with a broad range of stakeholders.

The themes at this year's event will focus on preparing people for the knowledge economy, open science and open innovation for Africa's development, science transforming society, and innovation shaping the industry of tomorrow.

Delegates will hear from over 260 speakers, including 120 from abroad, more than 50 from across Africa and nearly 70 exhibits on the side.

The DST also points out this year's programme will have three plenary panel discussions, 39 parallel panel discussions, and 32 science talks.
