Richards Bay and eMalahleni (Witbank) are the latest cities to get connected to Cell C's new HSPA+ 900/2100 network.
The cellular operator has been on a nationwide roll-out of its new network since September and has already connected Port Elizabeth, Bloemfontein, Durban, Pietermaritzburg, Cape Town, George, Nelspruit and Polokwane.
It is likely Gauteng is next in line, as CEO Lars Reichelt recently stated the province would have access to the network by mid-November.
Reichelt recently apologised for the operator's decision to do a city-by-city network roll-out instead of a once-off, explaining that the company opted for a cautious approach to ensure any technical glitches were kept to a minimum.
Cell C has committed to 34% coverage of the entire South African population by the end of the year, and 67% coverage by mid-2011. Reichelt said its new network covers 98% of the city population of both Richards Bay and eMalahleni.
The mobile operator currently offers two packages: a modem capable of speeds of up to 7.2Mbps and 2GB of data per month, for a period of 12 months, for R1 499; and a modem capable of speeds of up to 21.6Mbps and 5GB of data per month, for a period of 12 months, for R2 999.
As part of its Richards Bay and eMalahleni roll-outs, Cell C also donated Internet connectivity to two local schools. Dover Combined School, based in Empangeni, and TP Sililo High School, in Tasbet Park, each received a modem, 60GB data bundle and wireless router to allow multiple users connectivity at the same time.
