THE National Departments of Home Affairs, Health and Communication will feature at a seminar on the South African Multi-Application Identification Card to be hosted by the State Information Technology Agency (SITA) at its Centurion offices on Thursday April 06, 2000. The seminar is scheduled to start at 9am and end at 2.30pm.
The welcoming and opening remarks will be done by the Acting MD, Sello Mokale. The purpose of the seminar is to identify and involve key stakeholders, private and public, in the development of the smart card in the Home Affairs National Identification System (HANIS) project and related sectors. The work plan for the four designated technical working groups will also be defined.
The ongoing process includes:
Making recommendations on standard matters guided by internationally accepted practices and
Exploring the mechanism for establishing and maintaining uniform standards for both private and public sectors with regard to smart cards
Issues of concern include confidentiality and security; ID card versus data of other stakeholders on the card; legislation and regulation; and deciding on who will be responsible for information management and maintenance. Invited speakers for this seminar include Mr Patrick Monyeki (Department of Home Affairs), Mr Alex Georgiev (Department of Communication) and Dr S Khotu (Department of Health).
