Gateway signs island telecoms deals

Johannesburg, 28 Nov 2005

Gateway Communications has signed two agreements to provide connectivity services for communities on the islands of Madagascar and Seychelles.

The first agreement is with Madacom, a mobile operator in Madagascar. Madacom is a subsidiary of Hong Kong`s Distacom, Madagascar`s number one mobile operator with 200 000 subscribers.

Gateway is also working with Madacom to lower the cost and improve the quality of Madagascar`s international telephone services.

"Island communities are high users of international communications services and because of their geography, they are highly dependent on satellite connections for voice, and video services," says a Gateway statement.

Madacom spokesperson John Paul says Gateway was chosen to provide this solution because it understands the importance of international communication in Africa.

"We chose to work with Gateway because of their experience, understanding and focus on our market," he says.

The second agreement is with Intelvision, to deliver and voice over Internet Protocol services to subscribers on Seychelles. This will allow Intelvision to offer a triple play of voice, Internet and TV.

Intelvision spokesperson Trishend Kambaran points out that Seychelles is highly dependent on satellite communication.

"It was critical that we select an international partner that could support our requirements in the long-term," he says.

Gateway Communications Group CEO Peter Gbedemah says the company is excited to be working in interesting and high-growth areas such as the East African islands.
