HP is committed to education in SA because technology in education is the best way to ensure a technically-savvy and productive nation, says HP SA CEO Thoko Mokgosi-Mwantembe.
"My wish for SA is to become a fully-fledged knowledge-based economy, where everyone has access to IT and is sufficiently skilled to make themselves productive members of the economy," she said at the opening of a new computing facility at Wits University in Johannesburg last night.
The facility, to be known as the "HP Zone", is aimed at providing computing facilities for post-graduate students, especially those from previously disadvantaged backgrounds.
The HP Zone is part of an initiative to promote post-graduate studies at Wits and was created with support from HP and Aptronics. HP sponsored the computers and printers for the new facility, while Aptronics did the installation and will provide future technical support.
Shortly before officially opening the HP Zone, Mokgosi-Mwantembe said she was "passionate" about technology because it was a great enabler from a grass roots level all the way up to tertiary institutions like Wits.
Mokgosi-Mwantembe said HP and Aptronics were delighted to be involved in the Wits project to make technology more accessible.
"If business, learning institutions and government were to work together, we can make a real difference to education and economic productivity across SA."
