It should an interesting day in San Francisco tomorrow as Sun`s Scott McNealy delivers a keynote address at the LinuxWorld conference. Not only is McNealy expected to unveil the long-awaited x86-based Linux box, and possibly a new flavour of Linux, but Microsoft, the arch-enemy of both Sun and Linux, will have a booth at the show for the first time this year. Also expected at the show is a new agreement between Red Hat and Dell, and IBM is to introduce some very large customers that are newly "saved" from Microsoft software.

Web services standards, again

IBM, Microsoft and BEA are reportedly working on another set of Web services standards in a bid to get the show on the road. The companies are to deliver three specs to a standards body in the near future. The first, Business Process Execution Language for Web services, or BPEL4WS, is to replace IBM`s Web Services Flow Language (WSFL) and the Microsoft XLANG standards. It will define how business processes interact. Also on the cards are WS-Co-ordination, a structure for co-ordinating the different Web services in a business process, and WS-Transaction, aimed at enabling consistent and reliable operations across distributed organisations.

Dell-EMC in joint storage system

Dell and EMC are expected to launch a new joint storage system today after years of going it alone in the market. The Dell-EMC CX600, although co-branded, seems based mostly on EMC technology while Dell will handle most of the sales. The 2Gb channel system will be compatible with current EMC technology, and the entry-level model starts at around $100 000.
