ForceField-coated CDs and DVDs will be launched locally this Friday by Imation, a removable storage media supplier.

The ForceField protective coating is an invisible, thin layer applied during disc manufacturing that provides scratch- and scuff-resistance, the company says.

Standard CDs and DVDs with a polycarbonate cover layer on the recording side of the disc do not resist scratches, dust and other debris, says Imation SA sales manager Juan David Fajardo. "The thin polymer layer of protection from ForceField guards against everyday wear and tear."

The product has already been rolled out globally and was brought to the South African market about a month ago, says Angie Gill, Imation storage media consultant.

"The response from the local market has been excellent," Gill says, adding that Imation is targeting the local music and film publishing sectors. "But this product is suited to any environment where CDs and DVDs are used for storage purposes."

Everyday use can render standard CDs and DVDs unplayable, jeopardising the life of valuable files when discs are not cared for properly, according to Imation.

The ForceField technology is expected to impact the cost of discs, adding 20% to 30% to the retail price, Gill says.
