Intel SA has embarked on a charity drive aimed at involving the broader IT industry.
The Intel CommunITy Chest aims to collect unused promotional items, such as branded clothing, and distribute them to selected charities.
"There are few industries that generate as many branded give-aways as the IT community," says Intel.
"The Intel CommunITy Chest project is a unique way in which SA`s IT community can get involved in helping the less fortunate. Every company accumulates promotional clothing that sits unused in a store room somewhere - the kind of clothing that is either too small or too big; not the right style or colour, or simply outdated and forgotten," says Jacques Van Schalkwyk, country manager for Intel South and Sub-Saharan Africa.
"This includes such items as golf shirts, peak caps, fleece tops, T-shirts and jackets which would benefit somebody in real need. By donating these items, individuals and companies will be able to finally free-up some closet space while at the same time helping somebody else."
The project also accepts promotional items such as branded pens, corporate folders and bags, which would be useful in community centres, schools and training colleges that often struggle to afford even basic necessities such as stationery.
Donated items can be dropped-off at Annex, Axiz, Mustek and Rectron offices in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban between 26 September and 31 October.
The CommunITy Chests will be emptied on a weekly basis and the items distributed to the Salvation Army, SA Golf Development Board and Tembisa High School.
"We truly believe that the Intel CommunITy Chest project is a worthwhile endeavour. It enables the IT industry to give back to the community in a small but significant way," adds Van Schalkwyk.
