Spescom resolves VOIP issues

Johannesburg, 27 Feb 2009

Spescom DataVoice, a division of Spescom, has released a solution that integrates to MitelR's IP communications platforms.

There are complexities in the recording, management, recreation and analysis of voice interactions with voice over IP (VOIP) encryption technologies, according to Spescom.

Viv Crone, CTO of Spescom, says the introduction of encrypted IP calls led to new problems that cannot be easily resolved with traditional voice recording methods.

“Simply put, recorders cannot just play back recordings that are made on IP extensions where voice packets are encrypted, since they don't have access to the closely-guarded decryption keys.”

Spescom's solution resolves this through the recording and playback of Mitel-encrypted voice streams to its customers, using Spescom DataVoice recorders.

Kgabo Badimo, MD of Spescom DataVoice, says Spescom's DataVoice Recorder platform allows users to mix-and-match trunk, extension and IP-based recording and integrate new functionality as their requirements and needs change.

Says Crone: "With the addition of VOIP on the corporate local area network, businesses recognise an increased of interception of voice interactions. IP communications vendors have responded by encrypting voice traffic to ensure is provided against a wide variety of potential threats.

“The challenge lies with when and how encryption and recording of voice interactions is handled, taking the variety of configuration permutations into account."
