Spescom enters phase two of globalisation with R1b deal

Johannesburg, 17 Aug 2000

Communications and IT company Spescom has embarked on its second phase of globalisation plans, announcing the final stages of a R1 billion deal with a European telecommunications service provider.

The globalisation plan was announced in January when Spescom said it planned to derive 50% of its earnings from international operations by the year 2003 and would actively pursue an offshore listing.

Spescom began the first phase of its globalisation plan when it realigned its divisions to focus on communications and e-business solutions.

Phase two of the globalisation plan will see Spescom centring its communication solutions around Spescom LTD in the UK.

Although Spescom reported below par interim results in June 2000, the company says it has seen a dramatic increase in signed deals and revenue during the second half of the year.

However, the company warned that the slow first half would still have a negative impact on year-end figures.

Spescom says it has been selected by a major European telecommunications service provider for the development and supply of an asymmetrical subscriber loop testing system.

The negotiations are at an advanced stage and Spescom management expects the deal to be worth around R1 billion over three years.

The company says it will also actively pursue the integration of the Altris EB document management suite and its Datavoice proprietary software.
