Sony battery catches fire

A Sony battery has caught fire in a Toshiba notebook PC. This is not the first time this has happened, says Tech On.

This battery was part of a "voluntary replacement" programme, implemented since 2006, due to problems with batteries igniting.

After investigation, it was confirmed that the source of the fire was not caused by the same problem as the other Sony battery fires.

Dell's Ubuntu release begins

The founder of LinuxQuestions.org claims that on 24 May, three Dell models in the US will be released with Ubuntu, says Techlogg.com.

The claims come from an alleged internal e-mail from Dell, which also predicts sales of 20 000 units per year initially.

Ubuntu will be available on the following models: Dimension E520 desktop, Inspiron E1505 notebook and Dimension XPS 410 desktop PC.

HP unveils LED mobile PCs

Hewlett-Packard has unveiled two mobile PCs with LED displays, rather than the more common LCD screen, according to ITNews.com.au.

LED screens are more durable and lighter than LCD, but usually use more power. HP claims to have solved this problem through its own technology, called Illumi-Lite.

The 2510p notebook has a 12.1-inch screen, and is available with either Windows Vista or Windows XP. The machine weighs 1.3kg and is powered by Intel's Centrino Pro processor.

Apple MacBook users sue

Apple MacBook users are suing Apple for false advertising of their graphics, according to AHN.

The users complain that Apple advertised that its screens could display "millions of colours", but in actual fact were grainy.

There are also claims that Apple did not respond well to the complaints, stating the problems were imagined.
