Axiz introduces HP's first mobile thin client

Johannesburg, 12 Jan 2009

The HP Compaq 6720t Mobile Thin Client, from Axiz, addresses business needs for a more simple, secure and easily managed computing infrastructure, says Patrick Reeves, Axiz HP Category Manager. This is HP's first mobile thin client offering, and provides convenient enhanced security access to server-based, virtual PC or blade PC computing solutions while still providing the mobility of a notebook.

He explains that mobile thin clients are solid-state devices that connect over a network to a centralised server where all processing and storage takes place, providing reduced maintenance costs, minimal application updates, as well as higher levels of security and energy efficiency. In fact, thin clients are up to 80% more power efficient than traditional desktop PCs with similar capabilities.

Designed for mobile workers who have a well-defined set of tasks requiring a wide range of general-purpose software or unique business applications, the HP Compaq 6720t Mobile Thin Client is ideal for on-the-go professionals.

It is based on Microsoft Windows XPe and features a 15.4-inch display; solid-state design with no hard drive, fan or other moving parts; enhanced security with no data residing on it; WiFi certified WLAN along with support for 3G broadband wireless through a PC memory card slot; and a solid-state flash module for greater durability, faster data access and a more quiet and cool operation.

The 6720t also helps increase security by accessing software applications hosted on a server, virtual PC or blade PC computing platform over a secure virtual private network Internet connection. Data files and software applications are also saved remotely on a secure server to help reduce the risk of data loss, viruses and product theft.

“By design, server-based computing provides increased protection of your corporate data by having data files and software applications stored on your secure, centralised server instead of being stored directly on a mobile thin client. If the device is stolen or lost, none of the company's data risks falling into the wrong hands. You can also help prevent unauthorised application installations and virus writing to disk with the included Enhanced Write Filter,” Reeves says.

Updating or adding entire fleets of users is also simplified since data and applications are deployed, managed, supported and executed on a centralised server. The HP Compaq 6720t helps reduce the workload for IT staff with manageability features such as HP ThinState Tools to help easily deploy, configure, and manage software using a simple USB flash key for image capture and deployment, Altiris Deployment Solution, and support for HP OpenView Client Configuration Manager.

Solid-state design means no moving parts, which results in higher reliability, lower ownership costs and extended product life.
