Stratus Technology customers can get VMware Infrastructure Foundation software bundled at no charge, when purchasing a Stratus ftServer fault-tolerant system.

The programme is intended to help customers make cost-effective technology investments today, with immediate positive impact and lasting value as the current economic cycle runs its course, the company says.

Says Allan Jennings, Stratus senior VP for product and solutions development: “The 'We Feel Your Pain' programme gives customers a quick payback path to the cost-saving benefits of virtualisation when they need them most; an investment industry analysts are calling a no-brainer.”

According to Stratus, the server consolidation benefits of virtualisation are compelling for distributed sites at the edge of corporate networks or medium enterprises seeking to leverage existing infrastructure.

Stratus ftServer systems with free VMware Infrastructure Foundation software - typically selling for $995 (R10 500) - provide a continuously available computing platform with the operational simplicity of a standalone x86 server.

The Stratus offering is available immediately, providing support for both Windows and Linux applications on a single server and without infrastructure complexity, with the Stratus symmetrical multiprocessing fault-tolerant architecture supporting up to eight processor cores - designed to prevent downtime and loss. “This makes it an ideal platform for multiple virtual machines with mixed operating environments,” says Jennings.

“This new programme is another step forward in providing customers the ability to benefit from the combination of Stratus' continuous availability platform with VMware virtualisation's ability to drive down total cost of ownership,” says Bogomil Balkansky, VMware VP of product marketing, server business unit.

VMware Infrastructure Foundation, notes Stratus, includes VMware ESX hypervisor and one VMware VirtualCentre agent licence for virtual infrastructure management, and is available until 28 June.
