Cell C makes inroads in corporate market

Cell C says its launch this weekend was not marred by the minor glitches it experienced.

"Within the first 11 hours of operation, we made 23 000 connections," says company director and spokesman Zwelakhe Mankazana. "With any where you activate as many subscribers there are bound to be a few hiccups."

But he says the problems were minor and more related to the company`s new call centre finding its feet and product distribution than to network instability.

A large additional number of launch special starter packs were sold and have not yet been activated. Mankazana says limited numbers of the launch special packages were available but he could not confirm whether all had been sold out.

He did confirm that not all of the company`s more than 2 000 distribution outlets received stock and that most outlets did not receive as much stock as they would have liked, but that this had not dampened consumer excitement.

The company also says it has 228 000 contract users waiting in the wings, before Cell C`s post-paid terms have even been revealed.

Mankazana says these users are from large corporate accounts and that "there are not a lot of companies not with the incumbents already".

However, this defection of corporate accounts may take some time. "These are large users where in any event we`ll negotiate the packages," he says. He also points out that migrating a large number of users can be a tricky proposition.

Cell C has not yet set the exact date for the launch of its contract option, saying it is concentrating on ironing out system wrinkles at the moment. But the company has said that it plans to have contracts available by end-November.
