Telkom has extended its T-Zone WiFi hotspot pilot to hotels and conference centres in major cities throughout the country ahead of next year`s introduction of Telkom`s commercial WiFi service.
Nombulelo Moholi, Telkom`s chief sales and marketing officer, says the pilot is providing useful information about usage patterns and technical aspects of the service that Telkom will use to fine-tune the T-Zone service in preparation for its commercial launch.
The T-Zone service is available free of charge during the pilot. Telkom ADSL users can log in with their ADSL username and password, while non-ADSL users must set the service set identification on the wireless network interface to "telkom", open their browser and point to a Web site. The user will be diverted to a login page and invited to register. Telkom will SMS the username and password, which will provide two hours free access, which can be renewed when the session expires.
"One of the unique pilot sites is at BJ`s, the restaurant spanning the N1 between Johannesburg and Pretoria," says Moholi. "It affords frustrated motorists stuck in peak hour traffic the opportunity to relax and do their e-mails or surf the Web while keeping an eye on the traffic below."
Mohli says many hotels at holiday destinations have been added to the list, details of which can be found on the Telkom Web site www.telkom.co.za/tzone/ or by calling the T-Zone helpline on 08000 89663.
