MTN has initiated High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) - also known as 3G Evolved - trials with corporate customers.

The mobile services operator says 3G Evolved is ideal for applications such as mobile and interactive TV, enhanced video , multiplayer gaming and information sharing.

It will enable users to work faster and smarter, says MTN. "For example, by using HSDPA, the user will be able to download a 3MB file in just 12 seconds as opposed to 3G`s 68 seconds - which means an 81% time saving," says Ashraff Paruk, GM of products and innovation at MTN SA.

Paruk says as the penetration and use of services increases and new services are introduced, devices such as PDAs, smart phones and PCs will require greater speed and shorter delays when downloading audio, video and large files, or playing games.

HSDPA increases peak downlink data speeds initially to 1.8Mbps, with a maximum potential of 14Mbps in the future.

MTN expects to launch HSDPA commercially in the second quarter of 2006 after data from the trials has been gathered.
