PLT under review

The Independent Communications Authority of SA (ICASA) will hold public hearings on the technical standards for powerline telecommunications (PLT) this month.

The hearings will take place on 18 and 19 June, at ICASA's Sandton premises.

Eight entities are to make oral submissions. They are Eskom, Telkom, the South African League, Vodacom, Motorola, the South African National Defense Force, Hamnet SA and the South African Maritime Safety Authority, says ICASA.

According to the regulator, the hearings are based on the 16-page draft published in February.

PLT provides access to Internet and similar services using low voltage or medium voltage power lines.

This standard aims to provide the necessary EMC requirements to enable the roll-out of powerline technology systems without causing harmful interference operating in the 1.705MHz and 30MHz frequency bands, the regulator says.

"Compliance with this standard does not waive any requirement for licensing of PLT networks and services, as required in terms of chapter three of the Electronic Communications Act," the regulator says.

Industry players submitted written comments on the draft regulations in March.
