Local software developer targets US market

Johannesburg, 28 Jan 2002

PM Tech, the Johannesburg-based software solutions development, networking and IT consulting company, is targeting its latest development - a high-end operating system monitoring application - at the US market. According to Mike Leeuwen, a director of PM Tech, there is vast potential within the US market for the company`s new offerings. This follows the product`s launch at the recent Oracle sponsored Open World Exhibition in San Francisco.

"We are positioning the OS module as an additional option for our PM Ora toolset which has been widely accepted in the US for the monitoring and management of Oracle and SQL databases," he says.

"We obviously enjoy a huge competitive advantage in the US market because of the rand-dollar exchange rate. For example, a similar US-based solution would typically cost 10 times as much without many of the features that we have incorporated in our offering," says Leeuwen.

"A key feature of the new software is its Web enablement. "It optimises expensive IT skills resources as one person can monitor an IT centre`s operating systems as well as its databases from a remote location over the Web."

Technical perspective

The new OS monitoring is available as a in Version 3 of PMMonitor and PMOra, PM Tech`s database monitoring and administration solutions.

The company has already developed a strong international presence in the Oracle market, particularly in Africa, for its Oracle database-focused tools.

PM Tech focuses on Windows NT/2000, VMS and a wide range of Unix environments, including HP-UX, Solaris, Tru64, AIX, and Linux.

The OS module - as are all of PM Tech`s solutions - is Web-based and easy to use and has been designed to be quick to install. It incorporates user access control, notification via Web, email or SMS, and is fully customisable to monitor whatever is required.

The module also features Java-based pull architecture. No agents run on the servers, just a dumb listener.

This means all the overhead is in the Monitor database and not on the server being monitored. There is no overhead on the server when scanning, because the Monitor database knows exactly which server is scanning and what it is scanning for.

The OS module ships with a number of default scans and alarms. These are fully customisable and any scan can be added to version 3 of PMMonitor.

All scans collect data and graphical trends are available with the new Intelligent PMMonitor MIS module. These default scans include, Server processes, CPU usage, Memory usage, Page file utilisation, Swapping, Server IO usage, Top processes, Runaway processes, Disk space utilisation, application specific process checks and custom log file checks and searches.

PMMonitor OS module (PM OS) compliments both the Oracle and SQL monitoring modules of PMMonitor allowing complete monitoring of an entire IT infrastructure, simply and cost effectively.
