10Net brings world's first online gaming security software to SA

Johannesburg, 03 Apr 2007

BullGuard, a specialist in user-friendly PC and mobile security software and distributed in South Africa by 10Net ICT Solutions, has released the world's first dedicated security solution for online gamers.

SteelSecurity was developed by BullGuard in cooperation with Steel Series, a manufacturer of professional gaming gear. BullGuard provided the technical expertise, while Steel Series put its extensive knowledge of the gaming market into the mix.

"For online gamers, every second counts and any connectivity issues have a hugely negative impact on a gamer's performance, such as losing scores, quests and files. With SteelSecurity this can be easily avoided and flawless, stable game play is guaranteed," says Benjamin Verduijn, PR and technology consultant at BullGuard HQ in Copenhagen, Denmark.

"Latency is a major issue for South Africa's online gamers," says Riaan Otto, GM of 10Net ICT Solutions. "For many, bandwidth is already limited between their local PCs and the international servers that host most of the online games for the community. Where local servers exist, there is less of an issue but it remains. Typical security software interferes with available bandwidth by attempting to run updates while games are in session. The net result is that gamers disconnect their security software and open their machines up to a host of attacks."

Those attacks come in the form of port scans, denial-of-service (DoS) attacks, MAC address spoofing, unauthorised access by hackers, and Trojan attacks. SteelSecurity also proactively screens incoming and outgoing e-mails, Internet downloads, ZIP files, hard drives and network drives and performs more of the tasks associated with traditional anti-virus software. In addition, it allows users to upload settings, replays, demos and other files to a secure server to access them from anywhere in the world via the online backup system.

The primary difference between SteelSecurity and traditional security software is that SteelSecurity will detect the launch of online games and adapt its security settings to ensure users are protected. Gameplay will not be affected as the settings for the anti-virus and firewall are pre-configured for every supported game. Therefore, system resource consumption will be minimal and regular gamer nuisances such as disturbing firewall messages will cease to exist.
