Professional networking site LinkedIn has passed the 200 million user mark.

LinkedIn's senior VP of products and user experience, Deep Nishar, says the network's footprint now spans over 200 countries and is adding users at a rate of two per second.

"I'd like to thank each of you for helping build the LinkedIn network into what it is today. It's been amazing to see how our members have been able to transform their professional lives through LinkedIn," says Nishar.

Figures released by LinkedIn show the highest number of users come from the US (74 million), followed by India (18 million), the UK and Brazil (with 11 million users each). LinkedIn says the highest growth areas for the network are Turkey, Columbia and Indonesia.

The information technology and services industry dominates the network with a total of four million users, followed by the financial services industry at two million users.

According to LinkedIn, if the network were a country, it would have the fifth-largest population in the world - equal to the combined population of France, Italy and the UK.

LinkedIn was officially launched in 2003, and filed its initial public offering in 2011. The professional network is the third largest social network in the world after Facebook and Twitter.

According to the latest figures from World Wide Worx, in SA, LinkedIn has approximately 1.93 million users, and is recording strong growth.
