20Twenty appeals for patience

Online bank 20Twenty has asked its clients to be patient as it continues in its attempts to survive.

Saambou Bank`s curator gave 20Twenty until the end of last week before he would cease to provide financial support.

The online bank has been struggling to find a buyer since Saambou, its parent, was placed in curatorship. FirstRand`s acquisition of Saambou for a nominal fee of R1 excluded 20Twenty.

20Twenty CEO Christo Davel sent clients a letter this weekend asking them to be patient. "Whatever you may have heard, whatever you may have been sent, 'claims of our demise are greatly exaggerated` [with apologies to Mark Twain]," he wrote.

"We`ve been quiet but we`re here; and strong. Your 20one account and card work. Your money is safe. The Wired Warriors [20Twenty`s call centre agents and personal bankers] are there when you need them."

Davel says 20Twenty clients have been approached by other banks. "We don`t like it one little bit."

He says the bank is still in business. "And we will continue to be in business because we`re busy working on a 20Twenty that`ll be smarter and sharper than before. More intuitive. More focused. Less susceptible to things like curatorship."

Apologising that the "getting back on track" has taken so long, Davel assures clients that there is a "new beginning in the pipeline" and they will be given details when possible.
