In a bold move to expand its enterprise product offerings, 3Com has announced a new approach to building enterprise LAN cores, which effectively marries new software technology with traditional chassis-based switches in a single solution.
At the heart of the solution is 3Com`s new core switching software, called XRN (eXpandable Resilient Networking). This is designed to increase network resiliency and availability, and is marketed by 3Com dealers and resellers as a "pay-as-you-grow" solution to accommodate future expansion.
The software will be used in 3Com`s new Switch 4060 and will be made available for its SuperStack 3 Switch 4900 family.
"After redefining the solution requirements at the edge of networks by inventing stackable switches, 3Com has raised the bar by offering users more choice in terms of the way they build the core of their LANs," notes Chris van Niekerk, country manager, 3Com SA.
"This approach has the support of our channel partners in SA who recognise the opportunity to provide their customers with a solution that combines performance, flexibility, scalability and value."
Focusing on 3Com`s new XRN software, Van Niekerk says it will enable network managers to drive down cost and complexity, as well as gain tighter control of their higher-performance infrastructures.
"We have plans to lower initial product acquisition costs, yet, at the end of the day, provide customers with more performance-orientated networks with guaranteed quality of service."
From a technical perspective, 3Com`s XRN software involves multiple distributed switches, which, when connected together, act as a single, resilient, distributed core. More switch capacity can be added as the business grows, optimising capital investments in technology.
"Our `pay-as-you-grow` plan aligns business objectives with flexible, scalable solutions or modular solutions that have enhanced redundancy, availability and software functionality," adds Van Niekerk.
Products supporting XRN software
The first new product using this technology is the Switch 4060, which is a high-performance, wire-speed, Layer 3 switch, which includes "hot swappable" fan and power supply capabilities. 3Com will offer XRN software with the SuperStack 3 Switch 4900 family, ensuring that investments in these high-performance Gigabit Ethernet switches are protected.
XRN software can be used alongside 3Com modular switches in the network infrastructure. The Switch 4060 and the SuperStack 3 Switch 4900 family will support the XRN software through an upgrade.
The XRN software complements 3Com`s existing range of switches, networked telephony, wireless and Web solutions products.
Modular LANs to increase resilient networking
3Com has also announced the Switch 4007R with advanced redundancy features for mission-critical core applications requiring higher availability.
The new Switch 4007R adds redundancy features for mission-critical core applications requiring higher availability. With this new product, 3Com is boosting the resiliency options of its proven Switch 4007 for enterprise campus cores. This new chassis-based modular LAN switch is targeted at demanding applications, according to 3Com.
For the Switch 4005, 3Com announced a new software release that includes support for OSPF (Open Shortest Path First). With this enhanced functionality the Switch 4005 is positioned as an attractive offering for businesses that require the proven technology of a high-end chassis switch for their Fast Ethernet or Gigabit Ethernet backbone.
