3Com earns top marks from Current Analysis for new innovative Ethernet LAN switches

Johannesburg, 29 Aug 2001

3Com Corporation has announced that competitive response firm Current Analysis recently validated in a new product assessment report that 3Com`s new 10/100 wirespeed switches offer leading network performance and rich features at an outstanding price.

The Current Analysis report, part of its "How to Win!" tactical analysis, describes 3Com`s SuperStack 3 Switch 4400 as having the lowest price per port of any 24-port switch with comparable features, such as advanced Layer 4 prioritisation. In addition, the SuperStack 3 Switch 4300 is recognised as the most affordable, high-density switch in the industry. These switches support business-critical applications and securely connect employees to customers, partners and resources.

"3Com`s new SuperStack 3 Switch 4400 represents the next generation of LAN switching products that are rich in features, convergence-ready and priced to move. The new products in the SuperStack 3 family offer a compelling business case for enterprise customers and threaten competitive products in the price, performance, and feature functionality categories," said Joel Conover, Senior Analyst of e-Business Infrastructure at Current Analysis.

"Cutthroat tactics are the norm in the LAN switching market today, and 3Com`s new features and price points give them a tactical advantage in the face of heavy competition against other vendors that face a new, steeper network innovation curve because of 3Com`s raising the threshold."

"The detailed Current Analysis assessments affirm the tremendous confidence we have in 3Com LAN switches to win new enterprise customers because of the unique combination of rich features, ease of use and price/performance," said Karen Oddey, vice president, marketing and business strategy, 3Com`s Business Networks Company. "We are incredibly pleased at the exceptional recognition and response that the new SuperStack 3 switches and the Switch 4005 and Switch 4007 modular switches are receiving in the marketplace."

The SuperStack 3 Switch 4400 and the SuperStack 3 Switch 4300 complement 3Com`s competitive portfolio of network solutions, including market-leading Gigabit Ethernet switches, networked telephony, Web and wireless networking solutions. Recently, 3Com also began shipping the Switch 4005, a chassis-based, scalable, Layer 3 solution to add to 3Com`s modular switch portfolio, which is anchored by the Switch 4007.

Creating a more intelligent network with the SuperStack 3 Switch 4400

To ensure network intelligence and efficiency, the SuperStack 3 Switch 4400 offers advanced switching capabilities that identify and prioritise network traffic based on application, ensuring that business-critical traffic gets to its destination as quickly as possible.

Using the network management tool, 3Com Network Supervisor, network managers can easily configure multiple SuperStack 3 Switch 4400s simultaneously to automatically identify and prioritise real-time or business-critical traffic, such as network telephony, video and other multimedia applications, as it crosses the corporate LAN. For added convenience, the SuperStack 3 Switch 4400 automatically recognizes and prioritises 3Com NBX voice traffic out of the box. In addition, the SuperStack 3 Switch 4400 can block unwanted protocols and applications, such as MP3 files or games from the network, freeing bandwidth for business traffic.

High performance and flexibility with the 3Com SuperStack 3 Switch 4300

The SuperStack 3 Switch 4300 is a 48-port 10/100 switch, making high-density, high-performance Layer 2 switching easier and more affordable. With the option of up to four Gigabit Ethernet uplinks, the SuperStack 3 Switch 4300 is the most competitively priced high-density switch in the market.

The SuperStack 3 Switch 4300 has a total throughput capacity of up to 13 million packets per second providing a new level of performance for high-density switches. The switch offers various uplink options, such as 1000BASE-T and 1000BASE-SX, so that the solution can be deployed in virtually any network configuration. Moreover, the switch is highly reliable and supports resiliency features, such as spanning tree, link aggregation, and advanced redundant power.
