3Com launches Carrier Systems Technology

Johannesburg, 04 Aug 1999

3Com SA`s Carrier Systems Technology is aimed at building business-critical solutions on a standards-based universal platform. This technology enables network solutions to have the scalability and flexibility to handle both growth and change in demanding network applications and configurations.

"The Carrier Systems Technology was developed to integrate new and emerging technologies into an advanced connectivity solution, thus delivering performance, access and management benefits, while maximising customer`s platform investments," says Maurice Gaddin, 3Com`s customer service`s manager.

Gaddin explains that the Carrier Systems Technology is based on 3Com`s Total Control Multi-service Access Platform. "This provides network service providers and large enterprises with a powerful and complete solution, including support for remote access, IP , fax over IP, virtual private networking (VPN) and other converged voice, video and data applications," he says.

Based on the Total Control multi-service access platform, the carrier grade IP Telephony System is standards-based and supports common international protocols, says Gaddin. "The three-tier carrier-class IP Telephony system supports phone-to-phone and PC-to-phone IP based telephony over packet-switched networks." He says that unlike conventional IP Telephony systems, which combine the back-end servers with the gatekeepers, this three-tier architecture separates the back-end servers into a third tier, which enables carriers to scale these databases more efficiently and to locate these business critical databases in secure facilities.

In addition, CDMA, a standard spread-spectrum technology used in the deployment of mobile person communications services (PCS) networks, enables wireless carriers to offer mobile users direct access to the Internet, explains Gaddin. "3Com`s wireless program enables service providers to integrate voice and data access services to subscribers at lower price points than running separate networks."

Gaddin concludes that the Total Control multi-service access platform gives telecommunications carriers, service providers and large enterprises a powerful and complete access solution. "Remote access is 3 Com Carrier Systems` traditional business. With more than six million Total Control ports deployed worldwide today, provides more connections from more locations than any other networking company in the industry," he says.
