3Com Corporation has launched a new single integrated software delivery site utilising the latest generation of Internet and e-business solutions. The New Software Library site enables 3Com customers and partners to download the most up-to-date software from one single location without spending time chasing files on the Internet.
The Software Library acts as a "one-stop shopping` location, explains Maurice Gaddin, 3Com SA`s customer services manager. "The new system is based on 3Com`s latest e-business infrastructure in GIS and adds credibility to the expertise we project in the market," he says.
Gaddin goes on to say that 3Com currently has dozens of Unique FTP server sites and these sites are maintained to make software available to 3Com customers and employees. "The Software Library lowers expenses associated with supporting many individual FTP servers as it helps to drive a common practice and standard for sharing files within 3Com."
Gaddin points out that the Software Library site uses a single search method for 3Com`s files, enforcing a structured posting of information making it easier to find information on the Internet. The Library also provides better descriptions of software features and includes more descriptive reference materials which are critical to a customers understanding of the software as they consider and plan for software upgrades.
"The Software Library is much more than a listing of technical file names as most of the files are linked to additional details regarding technical information," says Gaddin. "Files are posted with a short and a long description with `hot link` buttons, an enhanced feature referring to other related information, such as a knowledgebase, release notes, product manuals or any other information posted on 3Com`s public website or the Internet."
Gaddin points out that one of the many advantages of this site is that 3Com`s field teams can direct customers and partners `directly to the Software Library to self-serve` and also use this site as an example of the company`s expertise in e-business. "Service professionals will also find the Library a reliable tool to post much needed software patch files, because it has the ability to post files in advance, and only become visible to the outside world on a pre-specified date," he adds.
