The offer includes an Ericsson SH888, which has a built in hardware modem, 3Com`s Palm III Connected Organizer, which is the latest PalmPilot handheld computer and a 24-month contract from MTN for R 4 499.00. Another offer is the Ericsson 688, which does not have a built in modem but does have the facility for a clip-on D127, which is the world`s smallest and lightest infrared modem, 3Com`s Palm III Connected Organizer and a 24 month contract from MTN for R 2 899.00.
"Email has become an essential part of life and until now, most businesses and mobile users had to rely on their cumberscent laptops which come hand in hand with too many leads and cables, in order to be connected," says Graham Highgate, the Connection Group`s buyer of new technology. "We are now offering a complete wireless solution to businesses whose staff are mobile and need to have constant contact with all communication mediums."
"Offering the combination of a cellular telephone with a contract and a Palm III Connected Organizer will allow for more efficient communication that fits into your pocket," says Sean Heyes 3Com`s Retail Programme Manager. "One can dial into Internet servers, browse the web, send and receive email from a remote site as well as send and receive faxes from this wireless compact office."
Wireless communication is made possible with a cellular telephone and the Palm III Connected Organizer through the software written by Smartcode for the Palm computing platform, which includes HandFax, HandMail and HandWeb.
"HandMail allows the user to get the power of a full-sized email application and the convenience of a hand-held computer. One can send and save Memo documents, preview email before downloading, delete messages remotely and filter important messages into customised folders," says Heyes. "HandWeb allows the user to access the web any time from a regular ISP, store web pages for off line browsing, view text and graphics as well as download programmes, files and databases over the internet."
Heyes goes on to say that sending and receiving of faxes is made possible through HandFax which also keeps a complete log of all fax transactions and customises cover pages with ones own logo.
"When cellular telephones were first launched in this country, they were seen as a business tool for the business executive, now they are seen as a necessity in everyone`s lives," says Heyes. "The Palm III Connected Organizer is moving in the same direction as more and more people do away with conventional filofaxes and laptops."
"This a total business solution for all travelling business people, with the added advantage of the SH888 having the ability to roam seamlessly between networks, providing the end user more access," says Tor Nordli-Mathisen, Ericsson`s local managing director. "This ability to roam also creates a great communication tool when travelling overseas, since the overseas networks provide the user with a 1800 GSM service which draws less power from the SH888, thereby saving battery-life and also works out to be cheaper for the user."
"I believe this is the trend for the future because this is an area of communication that has not really been explored and so creates a whole new arena for wireless communication," says Nordli-Mathisen.
Vicky Mowbray, marketing manager for Incredible Connection says that Incredible Connection prides itself on selling solutions. "Palm computing is becoming more and more popular in South Africa and consumers are demanding information, more options and top-of-the-range solutions. Incredible Connection will be able to satisfy these needs by offering an entire solution to our customers` wireless communication needs as well as give knowledgeable advice on what is on offer."
Incredible Connection stores will start selling the solution from the 27th October until stocks last.
