The University of Tetovo, one of the largest universities in Macedonia, has installed a 3Com Gigabit Ethernet network to enable effective communications across more than 30 buildings. The high-performance, high-speed integrated platform is one of the largest and most complex 3Com projects in the region. As a result, communications at all levels of work and studies at the university have been enhanced.
The university`s network backbone is based on 3Com`s modular Switch 4005, installed in the main building, featuring Layer 3 functionality and upgradable to 24 Gigabit Ethernet ports. In this configuration, the Switch 4005 is equipped with a second management/switch fabric and power supply, with two free slots for modules. Two switches from the SuperStack 3 Switch 4900 family have also been installed in the two smaller buildings that neighbour the main university building. The SuperStack 3 Switch 4924 has 24 100/1000BaseT modules and one expansion slot, and supports many features - such routing, prioritisation and multilayer filtering.
SuperStack 3 Switch 3300 switches were installed in the smaller buildings, along with products from the SuperStack 3 Switch 4400 family of switches and Total Control equipment from CommWorks - a carrier-class business unit of 3Com Corporation. Two server network interface cards (NICs) were also used - the main NIC was connected to the SuperStack 3 Switch 4924 and the other connected to SuperStack 3 Switch 3300s as a backup. If the main NIC experienced any problems, 3Com software would automatically move the configuration to backup the NIC and restore server connection through the SuperStack 3 Switch 3300 switches.
