3Com Corporation has announced unprecedented demand for Gigabit Ethernet technology with 10,000 port shipments for the second quarter of `98. Figures are based on shipments of 3Com`s SuperStack II and CoreBuilder switches. All 3Com Gigabit Ethernet products, which comprise the industry`s most complete 10/100/1000 Mbps performance migration system, are compliant with the final IEEE 802.3z (Gigabit Ethernet) standard announced today by the Gigabit Ethernet Alliance.
According to industry estimates, the Gigabit Ethernet market will reach $261 million this year, and, with the ratification of the standard, grow almost six-fold in just two years to reach $1.5 billion by the end of 2000. Network managers and network planners are evaluating Gigabit Ethernet and implementing it in their networks today.
In keeping with its support of IEEE standards activities, the Gigabit Ethernet Alliance has announced that the final milestone in the IEEE standards approval process was reached last week when 802.3z (Gigabit Ethernet) was unanimously approved as an IEEE standard by the IEEE Standards Board.
The completion of the Gigabit Ethernet standard adds native Ethernet backbone technology to the huge installed base of Ethernet network nodes. "This capability moves network traffic at one billion bits-per-second, a tenfold increase in speed," says 3Com SA`s regional director, Buddie Ceronie. "While the specifications have been stable for many months, ratification further confirms the interoperability and stability of Gigabit Ethernet technology, allowing customers to feel confident in using Gigabit Ethernet products in their production networks."
Last quarter, industry analyst firm The DellOro Group forecasted 24,000 port shipments from all vendors for the second quarter. "Clearly, our numbers indicate that demand for Gigabit Ethernet has exceeded market analyst expectations," says Robert Gohn, business line director for 3Com`s Ethernet Campus Solutions. "This announcement is proof of the market acceptance of Gigabit Ethernet," says "The technology has reached the mainstream, and 3Com is pleased to be at the forefront of delivering Gigabit Ethernet solutions."
"3Com offers the industry`s most complete Gigabit Ethernet solution for medium to large enterprises, delivering maximum bandwidth, intelligent control and leading price/performance," says 3Com`s Ceronie. "Many customers are taking the strategic decision to deploy Gigabit Ethernet based on 3Com`s solutions because it enables customers to deploy next-generation applications, such as video streaming, and at the same time provides more than enough bandwidth for their networks in order to meet future application requirements."
