3Com SA introduces high performance ISDN solution for Small Businesses

Johannesburg, 22 Jun 1999

3Com SA has announced the local availability of a new ISDN product designed specifically to meet the Internet and remote office communication requirements of small businesses. The OfficeConnect ISDN LAN modem enables small offices to easily link their computers on a Local Area Network (LAN) and provide up to ten users with simultaneous, high speed ISDN connections to the Internet or to other remote offices.

"3Com is committed to delivering products that are designed with the small business in mind," says 3Com SA`s product marketing manager, Gavin Levin. "The OfficeConnect ISDN LAN modem is an all-in-one solution that meets small businesses` critical requirements for ease of use, performance and quality. It offers the right features at the right price."

The OfficeConnect ISDN LAN modem removes the complexity of networking for small businesses by integrating a four-port Ethernet hub, an Internet Protocol (IP) router, two analogue voice/fax ports and an ISDN BRI in one small box, Levin explains. It features an internal configuration application, WebWizard, which automatically sets up the unit with minimal information and remains `live` during operation to alert users to possible problems.

The OfficeConnect ISDN LAN modem also offers a number of automated processes to simplify networking for small businesses including:

  • Built-in Dynamic Host Control Protocol (DHCP) server spoofing for flexible configuration of IP addresses

  • Network Address Translation (NAT) enabling multiple LAN users to share a WAN connection

  • Domain Name Server (DNS) functionality which translates numeric IP addresses to alphabetic names

"The OfficeConnect ISDN LAN modem is part of 3Com`s successful range of stackable units for small businesses that are compact and easy to use," says Levin. "The modem supports up to ten user profiles for Internet access and enables four computers to be directly connected on a LAN. By combining the product with an eight-port OfficeConnect Ethernet hub, small companies can use their OfficeConnect ISDN LAN modem to support up to ten computers on a LAN and provide all ten users with high speed Internet access. The solution enables small companies to grow their network as they grow their business."

3Com is expanding its small business channel and will support resellers through a Small Business Specialist programme soon to be launched. This initiative provides resellers with first-class service and support, sales tools and training to help them take full advantage of small business market opportunities.

"3Com will launch the Small Business Specialist programme to enable us to build on our market leadership by helping our channel partners sell to small businesses quickly and easily," says Levin. "With today`s announcement, resellers can now meet demand for Internet access solutions in the small business market with a product that is easy to install and use."

The OfficeConnect ISDN LAN modem completes 3Com`s full range of remote access solutions, while adding features that specifically address the needs of smaller businesses and single users, he adds.
