3Com`s new entry-level gigabyte Ethernet range enables affordable high-speed networking

Johannesburg, 05 Jun 2003

Adhering to South African business demands for more cost-effective, yet powerful computing, 3Com SA has announced the immediate availability of its new range of entry-level Gigabit Ethernet switches, designed to provide high-speed connectivity for enterprise networking applications.

The switch range is a more cost-effective extension of 3Com`s Layer 2 Gigabit Ethernet products and meets the needs of SMEs (small and medium enterprises), particularly those with limited IT staff.

Comments Joshua Johnson, research analyst at Synergy Research Group: "The accelerated adoption of Gigabit Ethernet, due to the drop in Gigabit pricing, is a great opportunity for 3Com with its new entry-level Gigabit Ethernet products and a wonderful prospect for users.

"Installing Gigabit Ethernet 10/100/1000 switching now - rather than simply going with a 10/100 switch - is finally beginning to make sense as a business investment for customers looking to get more value and the longest life from the network, as its speeds performance and is ready to match the Gigabit connections included with the latest server and high-powered desktops."

The new entry-level Gigabit Ethernet switches are standards-based and speed up networks while eliminating bottlenecks, moving from 10/100 to Gigabit bandwidth, either managed or unmanaged.

"It is a sound business decision to invest in new higher-speed Gigabit products that are future-proofed for new applications," says Wolfgang Held, network consultant at 3Com SA.

"Also, an increasing number of PCs are configured with Gigabit. Users can, therefore, take advantage of this faster access with cost-effective networking products introduced today," he says.

The new Gigabit Ethernet unmanaged switches are developed for ease-of-use, while the managed switches adhere to the needs of more demanding networks.
