3Com's TippingPoint positioned in the leaders' quadrant

For 2H05 Network Intrusion Prevention Systems Appliances Magic Quadrant.
Johannesburg, 09 Dec 2005

SecureData, a member of the JSE-listed ERP.com Group, and the African distributor for TippingPoint Technologies, a division of 3Com, today announced that the latter has been positioned by Gartner in the leaders quadrant in the '2H05 Network Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS) Appliances Magic Quadrant' report.

According to Gartner, 'leaders' are vendors who are performing well today, have a clear vision of market direction, and are actively building competencies to sustain their leadership position in the market. Their actions raise the competitive bar for all products in the market, and they can change the course of the industry. To remain in the 'leaders' quadrant, these vendors must have demonstrated a track record of delivering successfully in enterprise IPS deployments and winning in competitive assessments. 'Leaders' produce products that provide high signature quality, offer low latency, and have a range of models. 'Leaders' consistently win selections and have been consistently visible on enterprise shortlists.

"Since launching the first IPS in early 2002 and pioneering the industry by being first to market with innovative features like Phishing protection, Voice over IP (VOIP) security, bandwidth management, Spyware protection and Peer-to-Peer protection; we believe being positioned in the leaders quadrant in Gartner's first IPS magic quadrant is confirmation of our product and our security research focus," commented James Hamilton, president of 3Com's TippingPoint division. "We consider our position in the leader quadrant by Gartner additional confirmation of our ability to provide customers with best-of-breed solutions, unparalleled performance, ground-breaking features and superior service. With the recent launch of the TippingPoint X505, medium-sized organisations and enterprise remote branch offices are able to experience the power of enterprise-class, best-of-breed intrusion prevention systems with the enhanced features of firewall, VPN, Web content filtering and dynamic routing."

With more than 20 industry and security awards to its credit and significant traction with Fortune 500 accounts, 3Com's TippingPoint division has displayed initiative and thought leadership through the launch of several industry initiatives this year, including:
* The Voice over IP Security Alliance (VOIPSA), www.voipsa.org, which was launched in February and now has over 100 member organisations dedicating to finding and mitigating VoIP threats.
* The Zero Day Initiative (ZDI), www.zerodayinitiative.com, which was launched in July and is aimed at ensuring the responsible disclosure of vulnerabilities through collaboration with security researchers, technology vendors and security companies.

According to Gartner, the network IPS market for stand-alone appliances was approximately $246 million in 2004 and will increase to more than $400 million by the end of 2005. A network IPS can detect and block attacks, such as worms, and act as a pre-patch shield for systems and applications.
