4C ECT, a local content solutions company partnered with Swiss software and consulting firm Obinary, has launched Magnolia 2.0, an open source content management system (CMS).

Company MD David Degenaar says: "As a young company we were able to align our strategy with that of the market requirements globally, and as such took a decision to get involved with the open source market, taking Magnolia 2.0 on an assignment based perspective."

Explaining what differentiates Magnolia 2.0 from other open source software products, Degenaar says: "Developers at Obinary have transferred desktop software behaviour to that of a Web-based user interface, resulting in software that is deliverable via a Web browser and installs via a double-clickable binary installer."

"The software is first an open source CMS product and one of the products that uses the open source JSR 170 implementation, based on a Java content repository," says Degenaar.

"Obinary informed us that the software has had more than 45 000 downloads to date proving that it is of interest to users. "We have had some inquiries already in this regard, and our aim is to apply the software locally as well as market it in Africa to expand its growth," he says.

Degenaar says, "The software is aimed at all organisations across the industry sectors, from small to large enterprises, and is available free of charge at http://www.magnolia.info/.
