A flood of banking SMSes

Hundreds of Standard customers received masses of text messages updating them about their bank balance.

In what appears to be an unknown glitch on a messaging server, some customers received up to 100 SMSes before the glitch was resolved. The trouble appears to only have affected customers with Vodacom numbers.

Director of self- banking at Standard Bank Itumeleng Monale says there seems to have been a backlog at the service provider. “It is not the first time something like this has happened, and our technicians are working closely with the Vodacom team to fix the problem,” she says.

Monale adds that customers were likely to have been given a fright, since many of these messages are indications of financial transactions in customer accounts. “But, if they looked at the messages, they will have noticed that the balance didn't change.”

Standard Bank has apologised to customers who are now spending time clearing out mobile phone inboxes.

According to Monale, the problem is on Vodacom's side, and the bank will not be expected to pay for the hundreds of additional messages sent out yesterday.

Vodacom says it has resolved the issue and will provide further details later.
