Human resource managers in a software development company are all faced with similar challenges such as skills shortages, headhunters, staff retention and globalisation which allows for international companies to offer way-above market salaries.
Software development companies should be agile enough to see these challenges as opportunities by continuing with the things that work well and changing the things that do not, says OPENCOLLAB. Perform regular salary surveys to ensure developers are paid market-related salaries and keep in mind that this is a perfect opportunity to re-strategise.
A concerted effort should be made to help alleviate the skills shortages by offering internships in the company and to upskill developers in order to ensure they develop a sought-after skills set.
Embrace recruitment with a hands-on approach and ensure a fast and seamless process. Keep abreast of industry trends and constantly update potential talent pipelines. Work towards a streamlined, thorough and effective interview process by including specific skills related interview questions, whiteboard challenges and pair programming ensuring the developers that are hired have the best skills as well as a good cultural fit.
It is imperative that companies stay abreast of the most successful performance evaluation models and conduct regular personal development reviews with their staff. Constant feedback and corrective action where necessary is essential in guiding the person towards his / her desired goal. A great incentive for developers to learn and improve their skills is by encouraging and rewarding innovation within the company.
People are a software development company's greatest asset. Management should listen to their staff members' needs and adapt where possible to make their environment as comfortable and as engaging as they possibly can.
There is no perfect recipe for human resource management, but key to all of this is to have the passion to constantly review the process and improve where possible to make it the best experience to all within the company.
