CompuTrolley.com has been appointed as local channel reseller for ABBYY Software House. Deltalink Consulting, the sole distributor of ABBYY Software in Southern Africa, has confirmed this appointment. ABBYY specialises in the development of software for Optical Character Recognition (OCR), Intelligent Character Recognition (ICR) and Optical Mark Recognition (OMR).

According to Philip Wooton, GM at Deltalink Consulting, CompuTrolley.com`s proven track record of Internet marketing and is ability to offer easy access to products with fast and efficient delivery to customers, is what impressed most. "Both companies will be working together to ensure a high level of first and second line support for its off-the-shelf products," he adds.

Leading products from ABBYY include the FineReader line of OCR software as well as FineReader development tools, which allow developers to integrate OCR into their solutions. In addition FormReader and Enterprise Forms provide OCR, ICR and OMR - offering a flexible solution for customers who need to capture data from forms.

"ABBYY`s FineReader OCR products enable customers to convert every-day documents such as letters, magazines, newspapers, scientific documents, photocopies, faxes, etc., into editable text," explains Gary Naidoo, national product manager at CompuTrolley.com. "It provides users the accuracy of the original document and allows them to output text and figures to all popular word processors, Adobe Acrobat files and spreadsheets, keeping the original page layout, including graphics and photos."

Geared at the low to high volume scanning market, the ABBYY product set is bound to satisfy both hobbyist and business user. Says Naidoo: "ABBYY`s products do not require specialised expertise, they are user friendly packages that are simple and quick to learn, and includes a very comprehensive wizard."

Focussing on FineReader, Naidoo says this software package is able to deliver highly accurate, feature-rich optical character recognition functionality for both PC and Macintosh in 122 text languages, including Afrikaans. Afrikaans can also be added in addition to the usual spelling dictionaries.

"Basically the OCR process has been divided into several stages: the first is analysing the graphic contours of each character; the second is using the recognition language to try and decipher the character; and, the third is combining the results to determine the character and the layout of the page. In FineReader all this has been combined into a continuous process, and character recognition is closely linked with dictionaries that enable it to make educated guesses about characters," explains Naidoo.

New recognition procedures in the recently released FineReader version 6.0 have taken OCR software to new levels, says Wooton. "I have been involved with OCR technology since the 1980`s and was bowled over by the accuracy and document layout retention of this latest version of FineReader. It now really retains the look and feel of a printed document, be it wrap-around text, vertical text, columns, tables, non-rectangular pictures or varying fonts."
