CS Holdings has begun the process of putting Absa`s Home Loans division through the International Computer Drivers Licence (ICDL) qualification. The division`s general manager, Peter Chalmers successfully passed all seven modules of the ICDL and is now actively encouraging the rest of his management team to follow in his footsteps.
"In today`s world, you have to be digitally competent," says Chalmers. "Not only is communication increasingly being done electronically, but technology has even made it possible to make business decisions electronically. Therefore it is imperative that we understand how to use the tools that are available. The ICDL is a very worthwhile qualification and completing it undoubtedly improves one`s efficiency and effectiveness in the workplace."
"The ICDL is an internationally recognised computer skills certification programme spanning some 60 countries," explains CS Holdings Customer Manager for Absa, Monica Maritz. "It covers the basic concepts of IT, using a computer and managing files, word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentation, as well as information and communication. The expected level of competence is very high. Students have to pass all seven assessments, and must demonstrate practical proficiency in each of the most commonly used software tools.
"The Home Loans division`s completion of the ICDL is in line with Absa`s strategy to migrate towards an electronic environment," adds Absa learning and development consultant Gerald Draper. "The ICDL supports almost 90% of the division`s daily work content, and has certainly enhanced productivity levels among the management team. Our intention is to create a benchmark for other Absa divisions, which will hopefully soon follow our example."
"Endorsed by many governments, learning institutions and leading corporate companies around the world, ICDL has become the leading formal computer skills certification sought by students, workers, employers and the general public," says Maritz. "Achievement of this qualification is being seen more and more as the standard by which employers can benchmark the computer competency of both current and potential staff, and by which staff can increase their job prospects and future opportunities. In SA, the ICDL is approved by the National Qualifications Framework."
