The Absa Group`s plans to offer free e-mail to its customers on the Absafreemail.co.za domain has been hampered by Nizaam Karjieker, a Cape Town-based Intekom account manager, who registered the domain on Monday - shortly after Absa stated its intention to use the domain in the Sunday Times.
"I think it`s quite comical," says Karjieker. "They boldly advertised the name but they haven`t registered it yet."
According to Uniforum, the co.za domain administrator, there is no existing domain name dispute resolution policy for SA, and Absa`s only recourse would be through the courts, or to come to an agreement with Karjieker.
Karjieker says he registered the domain for his abseiling club, and plans to open a closed corporation with a similar name. "Had it not been printed in the Sunday Times, I would not have registered it," he adds.
ITWeb contacted Absa regarding the domain issue yesterday, but the group has not commented yet as it did not appear to know that a third-party had registered the domain.
