Acer and Pezula to host women`s golf extravaganza

Johannesburg, 16 Sep 2003

Leading information technology company, Acer and the Pezula Group Holding, will host the first women`s Golf World Cup in South Africa, set to take place in the February 2005.

The event, co-sanctioned by the Ladies European Tour (LET) and the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA), will be the first of its kind in the world, and will include top women golfing stalwarts from more than 20 countries.

David Drummond, Managing Director at Acer, says that Acer has secured a three-year contract to host the Women`s World Cup, in a bid to grow women` s golfing talent and position the event as the world`s premier women`s golf competition. "Pezula represents the lifestyle estate of the future - a wildlife sanctuary in tranquil surroundings without borders, and with access to the latest business tools and technology. Acer makes this lifestyle of the future possible, where a mobile phone, laptop or personal organiser can seamlessly link with other equipment to work from practically anywhere, at any time," he says.

The Pezula Estate is situated near the town of Knysna and the Garden Route, bordering the Sinclair nature reserve and the Noetzie river. The estate has an 18-hole championship golf course as well as a restaurant, bar, pro shop, five star hotel and equestrian centre.

The Pezula Estate golf course, Sparrabosch, situated on one of the most prestigious locations on the garden route in South Africa, offers breathtaking views of the forest, the Knysna Lagoon and the Indian Ocean, with holes, such as the 14th, built right on the breach of the cliffs. "The synergy between Acer and Pezula was spurred by both companies` desire to showcase South Africa as the world`s greatest golfing destination, and to grow the South and African economies via this investment. A percentage of the events proceeds will go to the Acer Girls Golf Programme, an initiative that is geared to empowering women worldwide," says Drummond. In its first eligible year for course evaluation the Sparrabosch golf course cracked the Top 20 in both of South Africa`s national magazines, Golf Digest and Compleat Golfer.

"Both Acer and Pezula are leaders in our respective industries and believe in the future of South Africa and its people. This event gives us the opportunity to create employment opportunities, while showcasing our products and services to grow our brand awareness in the global golfing community," says Drummond.

United Democratic Movement leader Bantu Holomisa - a great sport fanatic - commended Acer and Pezula for this initiative and added that the successful hosting of the women`s Golf World Cup would go a long way in reaffirming South Africa`s position as a global sporting host.

"We welcome this announcement and we have no doubt in our minds that the people who are organising this event are the ambassadors of South Africa. "The successful hosting of this women`s Golf World Cup will once more prove that we are ready as a country to host major international sporting events. This tournament will come right on the heels of the President`s Cup, which will feature top international stars," Holomisa says.

Holomisa, an avid football and rugby fan and an occasional golfer, says the timing of the announcement couldn`t have been more perfect. "This will further reinforce the perception that South Africa is very good at hosting international events. May this tournament further strengthen our bid to host the 2010 soccer World Cup.

"This is a unique opportunity and women of South Africa should grab this as it opens up more doors and allows them to network with fellow international players.

"We congratulate the organisers and their sponsors on this venture," concludes Holomisa.
