AMD-based notebooks for Dell
According to News.com, Dell is introducing Advanced Micro Devices (AMD)-based processors as early as October.
Dell`s consumer notebooks will be based on Turion X2 and Sempron processors with 40cm displays, and is working on desktops as well.
Although both companies are being vague about the partnership, Samir Bhavnani, an analyst with Current Analysis says, "Offering AMD chips on notebooks is a no-brainer for Dell. AMD is clearly not the second-class citizen it once was and there is no question that Dell hears requests from customers about AMD in notebooks."
Notebook sales surge
Notebooks are once again in the lead over desktops in Australia, says the Sydney Morning Herald.
This is according to the latest Gartner report which indicates notebook sales surged by 17.5% over April-June compared to the same period last year, while desktops slumped by 4.3%.
Total PC sales grew by 2.7%, representing a total of 1.1 million new PCs sold.
Semi-conductor sales rise
PC World says despite plunging prices for CPUs, semi-conductor sales rose 9.4% this year.
Although it was thought the industry would be affected by the likes of Intel and AMD slashing chip prices and driving the average price of a laptop down by 18%, sales were boosted by an increase in laptop and desktop sales and a healthy demand for cellphones.
For June, the Asia Pacific region had the fastest rise in semiconductor sales, which increased 12.8% year-over-year, and the slowest growth happened in Europe, where sales rose only 1.4%.
