Acer PCs and notebooks become best-sellers in key markets

Johannesburg, 07 Mar 2001

Acer`s branded notebooks and PCs made impressive market inroads globally during Q4 2000. Its most significant coups were the overthrow of Compaq as the Number One PC brand name sold in Italy and Acer`s rise to the Number Two spot in the highly competitive Asia Pacific branded notebook market.

According to the latest preliminary Q4 2000 Top Vendor report released by IDC, the US$8.4-billion global Acer Group, which is the world`s third largest PC manufacturer, saw growth in its PC and notebook ranges far exceed the global industry average in terms of shipments.

"The strength of our branded market globally is being mirrored in southern Africa where we`re growing our share continuously," says Peter Ibbotson, Chairman of Acer`s southern African operations.

"Much of our success can be attributed to the fact we manufacture of our own products. We have total control over the quality of our brands. In addition, we`re highly focused on nurturing our dealer channel, which we see as a key component in the successful penetration of key markets. The SA channel acknowledged our commitment to it by choosing Acer as its Channel Champion for the Year 2000."

During Q4 2000, Acer reported growth of 52,6% in the Asia Pacific (excluding Japan) branded notebook market where, in taking the Number Two position, just behind IBM, it relegated Toshiba, Compaq and Samsung to the third to fifth positions respectively.

Dataquest confirmed IDC`s Acer rating as the number one selling PC in Italy - a position Compaq has held on to tenaciously for the past three years. The achievement is largely accredited to the success of notebook sales in Italy.

"The growth in our notebooks sales is also strong in SA. What`s particularly encouraging is that we`re one of the few notebook manufacturers with a notebook range spanning entry-level to high-end. Most other vendors focus on niche markets. It`s very encouraging to see strong growth across the range," concludes Ibbotson.
