Acer unveiled a variety of products as part of its progressive design range of mobile devices at an event in Sandton yesterday.
The brand's Iconia A1 tablet, its first full-featured 7.9-inch tablet, was the focus of the event.
"The tablet market has really gathered a lot of momentum this year," said Damien Durrant, business unit manager for Acer Southern Africa. "The demand for devices is growing. Acer has recognised this, and as a result, introduced a flurry of new products to cater to this segment and to this changing environment."
At 410g and 11.1mm, Acer described the A1 as a convenient mobile tool, featuring a quad-core 1.2GHz processor, an LED backlit display with IPS technology, and built-in GPS. The brand's Touch WakeApp gesture app allows users one-touch express access to their favourite apps.
Feature-wise, the Iconia A1 is fitted with a 5MP rear-facing camera that captures 1080p video at 30fps; the front-facing camera pairs with the enhanced microphone to capture video and audio for video chats and recording. The device is WiFi-, 3G- and Bluetooth-4.0-enabled, and runs on Android 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean). Micro USB 2.0 and micro HDMI ports enable quick transfer or sharing of digital content, says Acer.
The Iconia A1 is available in either 8GB or 16GB versions, with a microSD slot supporting up to 32GB.
Durrant noted that the brand has a split strategy within its tablet line-up, with Microsoft and Android offerings. He described the Iconia A1 as a device that is perfectly positioned for consumers, and believes the product will speak to them from price and functionality points of view.
Celeste Gibbens, marketing manager for Acer Africa, introduced the company's brand influencers, including a competitive surfer, a tech journalist, a TV presenter, mother and model, as well as comedy duo Derek Watts and the Sunday Blues. Gibbens described these people as representative of the diversity of the Acer brand.
Other products on display at the event included the Aspire P3 Ultrabook and the Aspire V Series touch notebooks. The functionality of the brand's Aspire R7 notebook, with its unconventional design, was also showcased at the event.
The Iconia A1 is expected to retail for around R3 500.
