Adobe has responded to reports of user dissatisfaction with anti-counterfeiting technology in Photoshop CS.

"Photoshop CS includes a counterfeit deterrence system (CDS) to prevent the illegal duplication of banknotes. The CDS technology was commissioned by the Central Counterfeit Deterrence Group (CBCDG), a consortium of central from around the world," a statement advises.

"Adobe has included CDS in Photoshop CS at the request of CBCDG."

The statement points out that other and hardware manufacturers have also included CDS and similar technologies in their products. "For example, most colour copiers do not allow you to create copies of modern currencies."

Adobe says the current implementation of CDS in Photoshop CS will prevent one from scanning in banknotes even if the usage intent is within legal boundaries.

"It is the responsibility of the central bank in each country to provide images that can be used within the legal guidelines of that country. For example, if you want to reproduce images of the new $20 US bills legally on a Web site or in a marketing brochure, you can contact the US Bureau of Engraving and Printing for legal images that can be opened and manipulated in Photoshop CS."
