With industry-leading price/performance, IBM`s Token Ring Workgroup hub products were the most popular choice among networking professionals during the third quarter of 1998, according to independently compiled statistics.
IBM`s third quarter Token Ring hub sales rose approximately 50 percent from the previous quarter to become number one in both revenue and shipped port measurements, according to the Dell`Oro Group, a consulting and research firm based in Portola Valley, California.
The Dell`Oro study shows IBM increasing its market share from 22 percent of the ports shipped in second quarter to 32 percent in the third quarter, edging out Nortel Networks who held 23 percent and 22 percent in the second and third quarters. In the same quarters, Madge Networks` share declined from 18 percent to 14 percent, while 3Com`s share declined from 15 percent to 13 percent, according to the study.
IBM 8239 Token Ring Stackable Hub The powerful new IBM 8239 Token Ring Stackable Hub, which became available in July, significantly contributed to IBM`s Token Ring sales and technology leadership. The 8239 hub is very price competitive and offers rich functionality, a price/performance combination that was enhanced in November with the addition of LAN segmentation.
"The 8239 has been well received by the market because of its attractive price, stack and network management functions, and most recently, its ability to segment a single LAN into multiple LANs, which can ease an organisation`s bandwidth concerns," said Tom Routt, president, Vedacom Corp.
