Advanced user security in accounting software to fight white-collar crime

Johannesburg, 08 Oct 2002

With white-collar crime continuing to increase, the security of financial databases and accounting software systems is an area of concern for many companies.

A new security module has been developed by Sandton-based ACCtivity Software to enhance database security. Known as Advanced User Security, the module offers effective system access management and boosts the security of financial transactions in companies using the ACCPAC suite of accounting software.

"Our objective in developing this module is to offer companies using ACCPAC a means of enhancing and automating existing security features and settings in order to achieve watertight control of the entire financial/accounting database and computer system," says Naldus Pienaar divisional manager of ACCtivity, a Softline company that focuses on producing specialist enterprise software and middleware for ACCPAC

"To maintain high levels of security, the passwords of system users need to be changed frequently and the ability to track all transactions in the event of a problem is of paramount importance. The Advanced User Security Module has these capabilities."

The module offers ACCPAC users a more robust system that beefs up standard security. Pienaar says the module forces users to change their passwords on a random basis and at a frequency decided upon by the system administrator. The frequency could be once week, every 10 days, once a fortnight or once a month, depending on the level of security desired.

"All transactions and masterfile information in ACCPAC carry a time and date stamp together with the username entering the transaction. The module ensures that all users have to log on under their own name and password, leaving a clear audit trail. It is a system that ensures the 'fingerprints` authenticity of all ACCPAC information and transactions by clearly identifying the user," says Pienaar.

The module automatically prompts users to select a new password six days before the existing password expires and the process to make the change is simple and in line with Microsoft Windows security procedures.
