Africa INX provides free wireless/fibre backhaul

Africa INX, a wholesale telecommunications provider, has released a new product that offers wireless providers free licensed band wireless and fibre backhaul for licence holders accessing Africa INX's Internet or MPLS products.

The service is available from a number of strategic high sites assisting wireless providers with reducing the cost of building a backhaul network in certain regions and areas.

Says Stuart Hardy, MD of Africa INX: "There are a number of wireless providers in the South African market struggling to develop fibre core backhaul networks due to high cost, and with the wireless segment becoming quite crowded, it's clear that alternatives are needed to maintain even basic service levels in areas like 5.8Ghz, etc. Africa INX has a substantial investment into fibre and has up to 10Gbps available for backhaul in most regions in Gauteng. Fibre is being extended to the high sites and will be offered free of charge to companies purchasing our Internet products."

Licence holders purchasing Internet access from Africa INX will conveniently be able to access the Internet at the high site vs having to pay for backhaul to locations like Teraco. Due to the fact that most of the backhaul is done on the Africa INX Metro Fibre Network, clients will be able to reduce their cost of backhaul while getting access to one of the fastest Metro rings in the country.

"Ten Gig fibre nodes are available in locations such as Sandton, Bryanston, Rosebank, Linksfield, Edenvale, Centurion, Midrand, Randburg, Rivonia and several others. We have already extended this to high sites in those areas and are in the process of installing 17Ghz licence band links, to support backhaul from the high site to the closest fibre node if required. The cost for this backhaul is R350 per Mbps, which is a fifth of the price of normal Metro fibre. Wireless providers will still take care of delivering their own clients' links and we will connect to them at the high site," ends Hardy.

A full list of high sites will be available from Africa INX on request.
