Africa to see VOIP boom

The voice-over-Internet protocol (VOIP) service industry in Africa and the Middle East will expand at a rapid rate over the next five years, reports Telappliant.

A report by Pyramid Research reveals that the VOIP solutions sector will be worth around $2.77 billion in 2015, compared to $1.1 billion in 2010.

Hussam Barhoush, senior analyst at Pyramid Research, says: "The process of liberalisation in several markets has allowed new entrants to introduce VOIP services using new technologies, such as WiMax."

O2 embraces VOIP

UK mobile operator O2 has decided to roll out a VOIP service to offer its customers cheaper international calls, states The Inquirer.

Mobile operators have traditionally disdained VOIP technology as it threatens to undermine their business model of charging subscribers to use their networks.

O2 says that its International Favourites package offers a convenient service and cheaper international calls by enabling its users to stay in touch with friends and family abroad using their mobile phone.

Business VOIP to hit $20bn

The value of the overall global business VOIP service market, which includes VOIP integrated access, SIP trunking, hosted and managed IP-PBX services, will surpass $20 billion by 2015, says TMCnet.

This is according to ABI Research which reveals that many companies are replacing their legacy phone systems with hosted VOIP technologies.

“The trend of companies outsourcing their communications infrastructure has taken off in earnest, as enterprise decision-makers look for cost savings without having to compromise on features and functionality,” says ABI Research senior analyst Subha Rama.
