AfriCam, considered one of SA`s most popular Web sites during the past three years, has already vanished from the Internet following yesterday`s announcement that its South African service has applied for provisional liquidation.
However, company spokesman Keith Wallington says this does not necessarily mean AfriCam is gone for good and the company`s management is to make an announcement as to its status tomorrow.
"Management will release a full statement on the way forward tomorrow," says Wallington.
In a statement issued yesterday, CEO Peter Armitage cited declining advertising revenues and a sharp decline in traffic since the 11 September terror attack as being contributing factors to the company`s decision to seek provisional liquidation for its SA services. Armitage said a major funder had also reneged on a commitment made earlier this year, and the company had been unable to secure sufficient funding to continue operating.
Armitage indicated that negotiations are underway to find new partners, and noted that the Web site would probably continue operating in a scaled-down form.
"The directors of AfriCam in Cyprus will have to decide what form the scaled down site will take. The subsidiaries of AfriCam Cyprus - wildlifecampus.com and safari.net - will continue operating as usual."
