Africa's best kept retail secret

Pretoria, 19 Nov 2012

With Christmas just around the corner, South Africans have started braving the crowds at their local shopping mall to buy those must-have gifts for friends and family. While we have become accustomed to the effortlessness of swiping our debit and credit cards in making our purchases, we give very little thought to the technology that makes the point of sale (POS) experience fast and simple.

From entering the mall parking lot to receiving the till slip at the end of the purchase, we collect printed pieces of paper that facilitate the shopping experience. From lotto tickets to competition entries, these slips are as essential to the retail experience as the goods themselves.

"There is a term in the IT industry that refers to equipment that has to be up and running at all times: mission-critical. POS printers are mission-critical in the retail environment, and while it may seem that one printer is as good as another, quality is imperative to ensure that these printers perform well at all times," says Frikkie Koegelenberg, Chief Commercial Officer at PDC. "This is why we provide the Star range of POS printers to our customers."

Star POS printers, he explains, are not only extensively used in retail environments around the world, they offer quality and service guarantees second to none. "The world's number one retailers, including Harrods of Knightsbridge, have been happily using more than 1 000 Star TSP100 printers for more than six years. Star's customer support is among the best in the world - Star is probably the only manufacturer willing to talk to any customer to help choosing and installing the right printer, and Star's range of products is so extensive that customers such as McDonalds in Germany and Austria have bought over 5 000 Star printers over the last five years, and are still currently buying three different types of POS printers from Star. Locally, Star's products can be found in every parking lot, Lotto kiosks and all the Gautrain facilities."

Star is so confident of the products' reliability that the company provides extensive warranties on all products, including a four-year warranty on the TSP100 futurePRNT series, which includes the cutter, the TSP143U & ECO, the TSP143LAN and the TSP143PoweredUSB, all available at entry-level pricing. With five South African service centres that provide a countrywide reach, Star offers customers complete peace of mind.

"These are some of the reasons we have chosen to partner with Star," says Koegelenberg. "As an authorised distributor of the products, we are able to offer these benefits to our customers, in addition to providing our own specialised customer service experience and customised on-site support. Star POS printers are Africa's best kept secret, because even though they are extensively used and offer the best quality for money available, they are hidden inside kiosks and till points."

Star offers a full line of POS printers, including thermal, impact (dot matrix), multifunction and kiosk printers or mechanisms, along with thermal card rewritable products that service an array of different industries and vertical applications. "When it comes to POS printing solutions, Star Micronics' experience and understanding of market trends has led to a broad range of innovative receipt printers, POS printers and card printer products developed with one key objective - to provide an easy integration into existing POS software and systems, resulting in the ultimate customer experience across all markets," Koegelenberg concludes.
