Agile BI company takes on industry giants

Johannesburg, 24 Oct 2002

While Planning Services is still a relatively new company in the local warehouse and arena, its dedicated team of technical and business professionals is making a huge impact in the South African market.

BI Planning Services, a business intelligence consulting company, is starting to dominate its market by maintaining a core focus on the design and delivery of data warehouse and data mart solutions delivered with packaged business intelligence. With an emphasis on internal skills, BI Planning Services houses some of the top skills within SA, leading to a 100% implementation success rate.

The company has successfully completed a number of large and well-known corporate installations for organisations such as Nandos, Standard Bank and Anglo Coal - installation contracts that were seized out of the hands of more familiar data warehouse and business intelligence giants.

Bertie Van Zyl, marketing manager at BI Planning Services, attributes the company`s consistent success to its custom architectural data warehouse design, a wealth of skills, as well as its business sense when it comes to implementing and maintaining data warehouse and BI solutions for customers.

"Today, organisations have to make sound business decisions quickly and effectively to survive in the volatile global economy. Businesses cannot wait 18 months for a data warehouse project to materialise," says Van Zyl.

Van Zyl says that for a data warehouse project to be successful, it must be implemented on a platform that can be tweaked and altered to suit a company` s business requirements without continuous back-end redesign.

BI Planning Services has formed alliances with a number of international software and hardware vendors, enabling the company to deliver a variety of services ranging from project management, data warehouse design and implementation right through to technology and support services, as well as knowledge transfer.

Craig Hart, technical director for BI Planning Services, says: "We find that a lot of large organisations have monolithic data warehouses in place, usually with major inherent design flaws, and that is where most of the problems and project costs lie. These BI projects are eventually abandoned by companies, leaving them with the same business problem - not being able to access, analyse and distribute the right data to employees within the organisation."

"BI Planning Services primarily uses technologies that fit the IT needs of our clients, leveraging off existing technologies and infrastructure, thereby reducing project costs substantially while getting the most value out of their data," continues Hart. The company`s implementation methodology, perfected over a number of years, allows for rapid deployment of BI solutions in large and small organisations, resulting in ROI from a very early stage in the project lifecycle, while taking future client requirements into consideration.

"As part of our implementation services to customers, the project teams are trained by our highly skilled professionals before we even start the projects, enabling our clients to participate in the implementation and thus reduce costs and increase adoption," concludes Hart.
