Ahoy! SAS Institute is calling all skippers

Second annual SAS Institute Charity Sailing Challenge to set sail from Cape Town
Johannesburg, 15 Sep 2006

SAS Institute has announced that it will for the second year running host its SAS Institute Charity Sailing Challenge to aid schools in the Western Cape Education Department's Khanya - Technology in Education project.

It is calling on corporate South Africa to prepare their riggings and take part in the popular event.

Based on the success of last year's event, the business intelligence software giant has decided to earmark the SAS Institute Charity Sailing Challenge as a highlight on its annual calendar. The Khanya project is aimed at providing technology resources to assist schools in the Western Cape to overcome gaps in curricula by 2012 due to a shortage in school teachers.

The schools currently being supported by SAS include two primary schools in Eendekuil (Eendekuil Primary School and Eendekuil Laerskool). The proceeds of last year's event went towards setting up of computer labs - the proceeds from the 2006 event will go towards the improvement of these resources and the purchasing of interactive whiteboard technology.

Says Pieter Nel, Branch Manager at SAS Institute Cape Town: "Last year's SAS Institute Charity Sailing Challenge was a raging success as we managed to bring together 20 sailing teams and raised in excess of R50 000 for the schools. Social responsibility and community upliftment can only be done through the ongoing and sustainable support of projects, and it is with this that we return to the seas to once again raise money for the two Eendekuil schools."

Yachts used in the SAS Institute Charity Sailing Challenge are sponsored by members of the Royal Cape Yacht Club and teams sponsoring the event are assigned a dedicated yacht and skipper/owner. This year, 20 yachts will take part in the challenge - with sponsors of yachts still to be named.

"Although the SAS Institute Charity Sailing Challenge is all about having fun and providing corporate South Africa with a means to ensure team building, while being able to take part in a prestigious yacht race, our main goal is to raise as much money as possible for our chosen schools in the Khanya initiative," adds Nel.

SAS is calling all potential skippers and their teams to take part in this year's challenge. Please direct enquiries to Zoe Golden on (021) 912-2420 or e-mail zoe.golden@zaf.sas.com if you would like to enter a team.
